Questions
Questions and answers
What it grades, how grading works, and how your students' work is handled.
What it grades
Is this only for essays?
No. It grades any typed assignment that has a rubric or an answer key: essays and reports, short answers, quizzes and exams including multiple choice, math and problem solving, science and lab reports, and code.
How does it grade multiple choice or a quiz?
Give the answer key as the rubric, or attach it and mark it as the answer key, with the points for each question or section. Each student's answers are checked against the key you approved, and you see which questions lost points and why.
How does it grade math?
It reads the student's worked solution against your rubric. If the rubric gives points for method, the steps are graded as well as the final answer. Equations typed in Word's equation editor are read as written, and you can attach a marked answer key; a correct answer in a different but equivalent form is still correct. Handwritten or photographed work cannot be read yet. Math, science, and code are graded on the Math & Code plans, and the free trial includes up to 10 to try it.
Does it run my students' code?
No. Code is read, never run, so no tests are executed. It is judged on what your rubric asks, such as whether it does the task as written, its structure, and its comments. Upload source files, a zip of a project, or a Jupyter notebook; a notebook is read as its code and text cells, without the output.
Which files can it read?
PDF, Word (.docx), plain text, Markdown, CSV, source code, and Jupyter notebook. You can upload files one by one or as one zip of the whole class, including a Blackboard download. Scans, photographs, handwriting, spreadsheets, slides, audio, and video cannot be read yet.
Which subjects and levels does it cover?
Any subject, from elementary school to graduate study. You tell it the level, the subject, and the grading scale when you set up a job, and work is judged against your rubric for that context.
Can it grade work in other languages?
You choose the language of the submissions and the language of the feedback for each job, and they can differ. We have checked it most with work written in English.
How grading works
Do I need a rubric?
Yes. Every grade is given against a rubric or answer key that you approve. You can type it in, or upload the document and check what was read from it. Nothing is graded until you approve it.
Who decides the final grade?
You do. Every grade is a proposal with the reason for each score. You can correct any criterion, and nothing counts as final until you approve it. Your correction replaces the proposal and the original stays on record.
What do strict, balanced, and lenient mean?
They decide how the benefit of the doubt is given when an answer only partly meets a requirement. An answer that meets every requirement of a criterion earns full points at every setting. You can regrade a run at another setting without uploading anything again.
Is every paper held to the same standard?
Yes. The rubric and settings are locked when grading starts, so every submission in a run is judged against exactly the same standard. To change the rubric you start a new run.
How do I get grades and feedback out?
Download a file of grades with feedback, copy one student's feedback, or make a file ready to upload to Blackboard.
Does it detect cheating or AI-written work?
No, and it will not. It does not judge a student's honesty, effort, or intent. It grades the submitted work against your rubric and nothing else.
Privacy and accounts
Do students use this?
No. It is a tool for instructors and teaching teams. Students have no accounts and never interact with it.
Who can see my students' work?
Only you, and anyone you invite to grade with you, in the role you give them. Your work is kept separate from everyone else's, and grading, corrections, approvals, and downloads are logged.
Is student work used to train AI?
Only if you turn on "Help build better grading" (for a school or team, its owner decides). It is off unless turned on. Then each grade a person approves is copied, with names, email addresses, ID numbers, and similar details removed, so we can improve grading and build our own grading model; copies already shared are kept if you turn it off later. To grade a submission we send it to an AI model provider. We are in pre-release while we finish our written terms with providers, so please use sample work rather than real student records for now.
Can I have my data deleted?
Yes. Write to us from the address on your account and we will delete your assignments, submissions, and results.
What does it cost?
Nothing during pre-release. Prices have not been set yet; they will be published on the pricing page before anyone is charged.
